Wow, quite comprehensive there 🙂 Many I have not even heard of. Before the Hopful Thinkers head down country, I think we need to do some local beer tours …
Awesome list! I’m new to Auckland from Christchurch so it will be fun to explore. Rosalind where is the best place in Auckland to buy craft beer by the bottle? I’m having a hard time finding a liquor store with any decent local selection. Thanks in advance 🙂
Hey Gerard, thanks for the feedback. My favorite place for bottles is Victoria Park New World. Some Countdowns have good stock, like the one on Dominion Road. I also hear Liquorland in Newmarket and Farro Fresh on the Shore are quite good too, but haven’t got there yet. Hope this helps!
I’d also like to chime in and say that the Village Winery on Mt Eden Road has a fantastic range out the back of the shop. Well worth stopping in if you’re in the neighbourhood.
I’d have to say Blanc in West Auckland may have one of the best craft beer selections in Auckland. They also do craft beer on tap – either fill your growler or HAVE A GLASS ON SITE.
Bonita on Ponsonby Rd is stocking a range of NZ craft beers. My Bar on Durham St East also has a few. Chapel bar and bistro in Ponsonby have Moa Blanc in bottles. Velvet Burger on Fort St has Moa Pale Ale on tap and Emersons in the fridge.
But you can get a 750mL of Lion Red for $14! On a serious note, do they have taps? This page is more for craft beer on tap. I’m putting together another one for bars with craft beer in bottle.
I second this nomination. The owner is really knowledgeable and always willing to share his insights into the brews he has available. Simple, wholesome and tasty meals at super prices; and the tunes are REALLY cool!
Oooo, that’s a tricky one. This page is more for on-license venues. I’ve been meaning to put up a ‘best of’ off-license page for ages – maybe after the Hop, when things calm down.
I was in Speakers Corner yesterday, and have been going there for years, it’s malnly known for it’s “english” beers Like Fullers ESB, and sometimes they change. I don’t recall a specific NZ “craft” beer being available.
This is one of the few pubs that does not have background music to create atmosphere, very family freindly with cheap meals that include of all things “Lambs fry” and mash, mostly pretty average in quality.
Hi NIck Here from the Shakespeare Brewery (NEW OWNER) we will have a number of brews available in kegs and bottles real soon. you can also pop into the pub and try our Dog Berry Pale or Bolinbroke Lager… Cheers we just love massive beers !!
It needs a lot more, it’s slim pickings for good beer/cider on ponsonby road! You can get it at Vic Park New World, Herne Bay Cellars and hopefully Farro fresh soon. We’re down to the last few cases but next batch is being bottled soon
Golden Dawn (just around the corner from Grand Central) has six Hallertau taps, permanently, as well. Hallertau’s standard four beers, plus their cider, and either the Minimus or Maximus.

Correction to my earlier comment – Golden Dawn has Hallertau’s #1, #2 and #4 as well as the cider and a seasonal – doesn’t have #3.
