It’s been over a week since  SOBA’s appeal against DB’s trademarking of the radler. You all know the story: the Intellectual Property Office (IPONZ) allowed DB to copyright ‘radler’, a common style of beer in Germany; unknowing Green Man Brewery made a radler and DB bullied them into withdrawing the stock and changing the name; SOBA thought this wasn’t right and appealed DB’s right to the copyright; IPONZ, unsurprisingly, stuck by their original decision. That was a week ago and the Kiwi craft beer scene has had a week to react, to rant, to reason and satire. The best blog post, in my opinion, was Martin Craig’s on how SOBA won the radler case; the best satire is easily the video below, in which Hitler discovers that DB have copyrighted radler.

I’ve spent the week wondering what the best course of action is. I originally went with a more positive approach and thought about encouraging readers to support SOBA, by attending the AGM on Saturday August 4th, and support craft beer by attending Beervana and continuing to educate people. While these are still good ways to go, it wasn’t enough for me. And with this in mind, I’d like to introduce Every Man Deserves a Craft Beer Day (or Emdac Day for short). This Friday, July 19th, I would like to encourage you to buy a DB-drinker a craft beer. They can be a friend, family-member or a complete stranger (although a complete stranger may take a bit of courage). Simply buy them a beer, explain why you prefer not to drink DB beers and continue on with life, feeling happy in the knowledge you may have changed someone’s life for the better.

For reference, DB beers include: Amstel Light, Budejovicky Budvar, DB Bitter, DB Draught, Erdinger, Heineken, Monteith’s, Murphy’s, Sol, Export Gold,  Tiger, Tui, Flame, Bulls Eye, and Double Brown. You get extra credit for buying anyone who’s drinking any of the latter three.

So, I hope you’ll join me in supporting Emdac Day and encouraging your fellow men (and women) to drink craft beer!
